Dear friend of John Veltri
Dear user of the Orientations web-site

As you know, Father John Veltri suddenly passed away on October 27 last year. He had been the active and enthusiastic webmaster of this site, which offers help of all kinds for those who practice and guide the spiritual life, including his books Orientation I and II. Many people have told us they hope that this web-site will continue. I have agreed to be the new web-master, and I will carry out that task from Halifax NS, where I have become the director of our new spirituality centre as of February 9, 2009. The web-site will be dedicated to the memory of John Veltri.

Doing this is a privilege for me, since I have known John since our years in theology together, and have had numerous spiritual conversations with him over the years. It is also a daunting task, but I look forward to receiving much help from all of you. The site has a delightful eclectic and welcoming side which mirrors John’s character. I will try to respect that dimension. There will be some changes and some reorganization, and new items will be added as we go on.

For the time being the site will continue as it is, until I learn what I need to know to be a web-master.

In anticipation of our fruitful collaboration

Jean-Marc Laporte, S.J.

Director of the Jesuit Spirituality Centre: Halifax

I have prepared a brief account of John's life, based mostly on the obituary sent to the members of the English Canada province. (I am ready to further develop it on the basis facts, stories, perceptions you provide.) For this account, click here.

to the website
with helps to orient us on our spiritual journey.

Orientations are just that -- orientations. They are
points of departure ... suggestions ... hints ... landmarks ... maps ... etc.,
to be used ... or not used in as much as
they are helpful for the landscape of the spirit.

        But like most other maps one must always fit the map to the landscape and not vice-versa. Many of the items come from the Christian tradition of Ignatian spirituality with complementary bits and pieces from elsewhere. The purpose is to make "spiritual tools" available to those seeking to deepen their spiritual lives by giving orientations for growth:

  • in personal prayer;
  • in serious reflection on various aspects of prayer and spirituality;
  • in the ministry of companioning others on the inward journey.
        The web page continues to be maintained and updated by Jean-Marc Laporte. Links continue to be given to the variety of connections between the topics and to connections elsewhere on the web.
Like the scribe's activity of the Gospel,
this web site draws from the storeroom both old things and new!
"Every scribe who has been instructed in the kingdom of heaven
is like the head of a household who brings from his storeroom
both the new and the old."... (Matthew 13:52)
